Etymology

Possibly developed from a meaning of the noun ass (which is recorded earlier in other varieties of English as a word for the buttocks) by synecdoche, this part of a person or their body being used to represent the whole. See OED ass, n.2 1a. Compare OED ass, n.2 3a.
